About this directory

What this site is

New Zealand has a lot of school information, but it is spread across spreadsheets, PDFs and Ministry portals. NewzSchools brings it together into one place: 2,578 schools and 4,376 early childhood services, each with its own page, plus regional and national statistics.

Everything here is free to use. There is no login, no paywall and no registration.

Where the data comes from

• School and ECE directory — the Ministry of Education school directory and early childhood directory exports, including contact details, location, school type, authority, enrolment scheme, boarding, language of instruction and isolation index.
• Roll and ethnicity — roll census figures recorded at the directory snapshot date of 1 September 2026.
• Equity Index (EQI) — the Ministry's equity index, which measures socio-economic challenge in a school's community.
• Qualification attainment — national and regional NCEA and University Entrance statistics published through Education Counts.
• School changes — the published closures, mergers, new schools and name changes workbook.

The original source files are not modified. Where a figure looks wrong, it is worth checking against the Ministry's own publication before drawing conclusions.

How to use the directory

• Search all schools by name, town or region, then narrow with filters for schooling level, funding type, gender, urban or rural setting, boarding, enrolment scheme, Equity Index band and roll size.
• Browse by region or by schooling level when you are still narrowing things down.
• Open any school page for the full picture: roll composition, Equity Index in national context, isolation, nearby schools and contact details.
• Check NCEA results for regional qualification attainment trends.
• See school changes for closures, mergers and new schools in the current cycle.

What we do not do

This directory does not rank schools, does not publish league tables and does not make recommendations. The Equity Index is a funding measure, not a measure of teaching quality — a school with a high EQI is not a worse school. Roll size, ethnicity and isolation are context, not verdicts.

School choice is personal. Use the data to shortlist, then visit, ask questions and talk to other whānau.
